AI Search Visibility — How to Measure Your Brand in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews

Add as Preferred Source on Google
Table of Contents

SEO visibility is a measure of how often your website appears in search results for the keywords that matter to you, weighted by position and search volume. AI search visibility applies the same idea to AI answers: how often ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews mention or cite your brand across a fixed set of prompts.

Key takeaways

Your boss has probably asked some version of "are we showing up in ChatGPT?" This guide gives you a way to answer that with numbers instead of screenshots. It covers what AI visibility actually measures, the metrics worth reporting, a free manual method and when paid tools earn their cost.

What AI search visibility is

In classic SEO, a visibility score summarises your rankings across tracked keywords into one number. Tools weight each ranking by its position and the keyword's search volume, so a #1 for a big term counts for more than a #9 for a niche one.

AI search visibility asks a similar question for answer engines. When someone types a prompt related to your business into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot or Google's AI features, does the answer:

The difference from SEO is that there's no stable ranking to check. The same prompt can produce a different answer each time, and there's no public data on how often a given prompt is asked. That's why measuring AI visibility is closer to running a survey than reading a rank tracker.

If you want the mechanics of how these engines choose sources in the first place, read my explainer on LLM SEO first. For how this work relates to traditional rankings, see GEO vs SEO.

AI visibility metrics: mentions, citations, share of voice and sentiment

These are the four metrics I'd report on. Most tools use the same concepts, sometimes under different names.

Mentions

How often your brand name appears in the answer text. This is the closest thing to brand awareness in AI search. A mention without a link still matters: it's what someone reads before deciding what to search next.

Citations

How often the answer links to a page on your domain as a source. Citations are what can send traffic, so they're the metric closest to SEO outcomes. You can be cited without being mentioned (your page is a source for a general fact) and mentioned without being cited (the model knows your brand, but sources elsewhere).

Share of voice

Your mentions as a percentage of all brand mentions across your prompt set, including competitors. If 30 prompts produce 100 brand mentions and 18 are yours, your share of voice is 18%. This is the metric that makes a report meaningful, because it shows your position relative to the market.

Sentiment

Whether the answer describes you positively, neutrally or negatively, and whether the facts are right. An AI answer that mentions you as "expensive and hard to set up" is visibility you don't want. I score it simply as positive, neutral or negative per mention.

What about an "AI visibility score"?

Many tools roll these into one AI visibility score. That's handy for a dashboard, but each vendor calculates it differently, so scores aren't comparable between tools. Report the underlying metrics too, and don't compare your Semrush score with a competitor's number from a different tool.

Do AI visibility numbers mean anything? The sampling problem

This is the question Reddit keeps asking, and it's a fair one.

In January 2026, SparkToro and Gumshoe published research based on 2,961 runs of 12 prompts across ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI. They found a less than 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI would give the same list of brands in any two responses, and roughly 1 in 1,000 for the same order (SparkToro).

That sounds like it makes tracking pointless. It doesn't. The same study concluded that "visibility % across dozens to hundreds of prompts run multiple times is a reasonable metric". Top brands in tight categories showed up in a majority of repeated runs.

What this means in practice:

Manual tracking method (free)

You don't need a tool to start. This is the method I use.

  1. Write 20–30 prompts. Mix informational ("how does X work"), comparison ("best X for Y", "X vs Y") and brand prompts ("is [brand] good for Z"). Write them the way a customer would type them, in full sentences.
  2. Pick your engines. Start with ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews (or AI Mode), Gemini and Perplexity. Add Copilot if your audience is heavy on Microsoft.
  3. Use clean sessions. Log out, or use a fresh chat with memory and personalisation off, so past conversations don't bias the answer. Note your country, since answers vary by location.
  4. Run each prompt three times per engine. Start a new chat each time.
  5. Log each run in the sheet. Columns: date, engine, prompt, run number, brand mentioned (Y/N), cited URL (if any), competitors mentioned, sentiment, notes.
  6. Calculate the metrics. Mention rate = runs with a mention ÷ total runs. Citation rate the same way. Share of voice = your mentions ÷ all brand mentions.
  7. Repeat monthly on the same dates. Keep the prompt list fixed for at least a quarter so trends are comparable. Add new prompts in a separate tab.
  8. Add first-party data. Pull AI referral traffic from analytics and citation data from Bing Webmaster Tools (details below).

Thirty prompts, four engines, three runs is 360 checks a month. That's a few hours of work, which is why teams move to tools once they want more prompts or more frequent checks.

Free first-party data to add

Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance. Bing launched an AI Performance report in public preview in February 2026, showing where your content is cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI answers, and the grounding queries behind those citations. In June 2026 Bing added intents, topics, a "Citation Share" metric and period comparisons (Bing Webmaster Blog). It's the most detailed first-party AI citation report from a major engine I know of.

ChatGPT referral traffic. OpenAI says ChatGPT "automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs" (OpenAI Help Center). Filter by that source in GA4, and add referrals from perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.

Google Search Console. Since June 2026, Search Console has a Search generative AI performance report showing how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode (Google Search Central Blog). It counts impressions, not clicks, so pair it with your analytics data.

Tool-based AI visibility tracking

Tools do the same job as the spreadsheet, at scale. They run prompts automatically, often daily, across several engines, and calculate the metrics for you. The trade-off is cost and less control over how prompts are run.

Option Engines covered Metrics Starting price (checked Sep 2026) Best for
Manual sheet Any you check Mentions, citations, share of voice, sentiment Free (your time) Small brands, first baseline
Search Console generative AI report + Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance AI Overviews, AI Mode, Copilot and Bing AI answers Impressions (Google); citations, grounding queries, citation share (Bing) Free Everyone; first-party data
Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity Visibility, competitor analysis, prompt tracking $99/month per domain (billed annually) Teams already on Semrush
Ahrefs Brand Radar AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot Mentions, citations, share of voice, estimated impressions Paid add-on; custom prompts from €47/month Large-scale market views
Otterly.AI ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude Mentions, citations, share of voice, position, sentiment From $29/month Small teams wanting automation

Prices change often, so check each vendor's pricing page before buying. I compare these and other options in more depth in my guide to the best AI visibility tools.

Two things to ask any vendor: how many times each prompt is run per check, and whether results come from the logged-in consumer app or an API. Both affect how representative the numbers are.

Reporting template for AI search visibility

A monthly AI visibility report should fit on one page. Here's the structure I use:

1. Headline numbers (this month vs last month vs three months ago)

2. By engine

3. First-party data

4. What changed

5. Actions for next month

Add a one-line caveat at the bottom: "Figures are based on sampled prompts, run three times each, and are directional." That line saves you from arguments later.

AI visibility belongs next to your other SEO KPIs, not in a separate silo. The pages that earn AI citations are usually the ones already ranking well in search.

Frequently asked questions

What is SEO visibility?

SEO visibility is a score showing how often your website appears in search results for a set of tracked keywords, weighted by ranking position and search volume. Higher rankings for bigger keywords raise it. AI search visibility applies the same idea to AI answers, measuring mentions and citations across prompts.

How do you track brand mentions in AI?

Write 20 to 30 prompts your customers would ask, run each one several times in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and log whether your brand is mentioned or cited. Calculate mention rate and share of voice monthly. Tools like Semrush, Ahrefs Brand Radar or Otterly.AI automate this.

What is a good AI visibility score?

There's no universal benchmark, because each tool calculates its score differently. Compare yourself against direct competitors in the same tool and prompt set. Rising share of voice over several months is a better sign of progress than any single score.

Why do AI answers change every time I ask?

AI models generate answers with some randomness, and search-based engines may retrieve different sources on each run. SparkToro's 2026 research found brand lists almost never repeat exactly. That's why you should measure the percentage of runs you appear in across many prompts.

Can I see AI Overviews traffic in Search Console?

Partly. Search Console's Search generative AI performance report, added in June 2026, shows how often your links appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It reports impressions, not clicks. For citation-level detail on Copilot, Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report adds grounding queries.
