Word Counter

This free word counter shows words, characters, sentences, reading time and keyword density as you type. Set a word goal, check character limits for titles and social posts, and keep everything private: nothing you type is uploaded.

How the word counter counts

CountHow it's measured
WordsAny run of letters or numbers. Hyphenated words ("well-known") and contractions ("don't") count as one word, the same as Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
CharactersEvery letter, number, space and punctuation mark. A second count leaves out spaces.
SentencesText ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, or on its own line.
ParagraphsEach line that contains text.
Reading levelThe Flesch Reading Ease score, from 0 (very hard) to 100 (very easy). It's based on sentence length and syllables per word. 60 or above is plain English.
Reading and speaking timeYour word count divided by 238 words a minute for silent reading and 130 for speaking aloud. The reading rate comes from a 2019 review of 190 reading studies by psychologist Marc Brysbaert.

How to use the word counter

  1. Type in the box or paste your text. Every count updates as you type.
  2. Click Goal to set a target word count and track your progress with the bar.
  3. Turn on Auto-save to keep your text on this device if you close the page. It's stored only in your browser.
  4. Use Case to switch to sentence case, Title Case, UPPERCASE or lowercase. Undo reverses any change.
  5. Check Keyword Density to see the words and phrases you repeat most, and Character Limits to see whether your text fits a title tag, meta description or social post.

How many words should a blog post be?

As many as the topic needs, and no more. Google is direct about this. Its guidance on helpful content asks, "Are you writing to a particular word count because you've heard or read that Google has a preferred word count?" and answers "(No, we don't.)" (source: Google Search Central).

A useful way to set a target: look at the pages that already rank for your keyword and note how much ground they cover, then aim to answer the question more completely and more clearly, not just at greater length. Use the word goal to stay within limits set by an editor, a client or a course.

Character limits worth knowing

Keyword density: what to look for

There's no ideal keyword density. Use the panel to spot words you've repeated so often that the text reads awkwardly, then swap some for natural variations. If your main topic doesn't appear in the top few words at all, the page may not be clearly about it.

Yes, the main character count includes spaces. The Details panel also shows the count without spaces.
How is reading time calculated? ▼
Reading time divides your word count by 238 words a minute, an average silent reading speed for adults. Speaking time uses 130 words a minute.
Is my text saved or uploaded? ▼
Your text is never uploaded. If you turn on Auto-save, it's stored only in your own browser on this device. Turn Auto-save off to delete it.
