To rank on ChatGPT, make sure OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot can crawl your site, get your pages indexed and ranking in Bing, and publish clear, specific answers that other sites mention by name. ChatGPT search pulls live results from search partners such as Microsoft, so ChatGPT SEO starts with ordinary crawlability and Bing visibility.
Key takeaways
- If robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI says your content won't appear in ChatGPT search answers.
- Bing visibility matters: one study found 87% of ChatGPT citations matched Bing's top results.
- When ChatGPT answers without searching, it relies on what the wider web says about your brand.
- You can test and track ChatGPT visibility with fixed prompts and
utm_source=chatgpt.comreferrals.
Reddit threads on this topic split into two camps. One says you can't optimise for ChatGPT at all. The other sells "LLM ranking hacks". Both are wrong. Some things are documented by OpenAI, some are measurable, and the rest is guesswork. This guide sticks to the first two.
How ChatGPT search finds pages (and where Bing fits)
ChatGPT answers in two modes, and they need different work.
Mode 1: it searches the web. According to OpenAI's help page on ChatGPT search, ChatGPT searches automatically when a question would benefit from current information. It rewrites the prompt into one or more search queries, sends them to search partners (OpenAI names Microsoft and Shopify), and may send follow-up queries to other providers. It then ranks what comes back and cites sources in the answer.
Mode 2: it answers from its training data. For questions like "what's a good CRM for a small agency", ChatGPT may answer without searching at all. Here, what matters is how often and how consistently your brand appears across the web content the model learned from.
OpenAI runs separate crawlers for these jobs. Its crawler documentation says:
- OAI-SearchBot crawls for ChatGPT search. Sites that block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links."
- GPTBot crawls for model training. Blocking it opts you out of training, not out of search.
- ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a user's request triggers it. It isn't an automatic crawler.
OpenAI also notes it can take around 24 hours for search to reflect a robots.txt change.
So where does Bing come in? Microsoft is a named search partner, and the evidence lines up. A Seer Interactive study of 500+ citations across 100 queries found that 87% of ChatGPT's citations matched Bing's top organic results, against 56% for Google. It was a small study from early 2025, and ChatGPT's search stack has changed since, but it's the clearest public data on the question. I've covered the partner question in more depth in what search engine ChatGPT uses.
The practical upshot: if you're invisible in Bing, you're starting ChatGPT SEO with a handicap.
Get indexed in Bing
Most sites set up Google Search Console on day one and never touch Bing. For ChatGPT SEO, that's the first gap to close.
- Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot and Bingbot. Open
yoursite.com/robots.txt. Make sure neither bot is disallowed, directly or through a blanketUser-agent: *block. Security plugins and CDN bot rules sometimes block AI crawlers without telling you, so check your firewall settings too. - Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools. You can import directly from Google Search Console, which takes a couple of minutes.
- Submit your XML sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools. Use the same sitemap you give Google.
- Turn on IndexNow. IndexNow lets you ping Bing the moment a URL is published or updated. Many SEO plugins and CDNs support it natively.
- Run URL Inspection on your key pages. Bing's URL Inspection shows whether a page is indexed and flags issues. Fix anything blocking your money pages first.
- Search Bing for your brand and top topics. Look for your homepage, your key service pages and your best guides. If they're missing, you've found your problem.
- Check server logs for OAI-SearchBot. If it never visits, look at your CDN or firewall before anything else.
One newer tool is worth a look. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report, and in June 2026 Microsoft added citation share, intents and topics to it. It covers citations across Microsoft Copilot, Bing and "select partner AI experiences". Microsoft doesn't say ChatGPT is one of those partners, so don't read it as a ChatGPT report. It's still the closest thing to an official AI citation dashboard any search engine offers.
Brand mentions and entity signals
Search mode gets you cited for a specific page. Training-data mode decides whether ChatGPT mentions your brand at all when nobody names you in the prompt.
For that second mode, you need the web to describe your brand clearly and consistently. The signals I focus on:
Consistent brand facts everywhere. Your name, what you do, who you serve and where you're based should match across your site, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, Crunchbase, directory listings and author bios. Contradictions make it harder for any system to connect the dots.
Organization and Person schema. Add Organization schema with sameAs links to your official profiles, and Person schema for authors. It's not a ChatGPT ranking factor that OpenAI has confirmed, but it removes ambiguity for every crawler that reads it.
Mentions on sites that get cited. Reviews, comparison articles, "best X for Y" roundups, podcasts and industry publications. For many commercial queries, ChatGPT's answer is built from a handful of listicles. If you're not on them, you're not in the answer. Real guest contributions help here, and my guest posting guide covers how to earn them without spam.
Genuine community presence. Reddit threads and niche forums can show up in ChatGPT citations. Answering questions honestly under your own name is fine. Seeding fake recommendations is spam, it gets removed, and it can damage the brand you're trying to build.
This is the part of LLM SEO that looks most like classic digital PR, because it is.
Content formats ChatGPT quotes
When ChatGPT searches, it pulls short passages from the pages it retrieves. Pages that answer a question directly in the first lines of a section are easier to quote than pages that bury the answer under 400 words of context.
Formats that tend to get used as sources:
- Direct-answer paragraphs. A 40-60 word answer right under the heading, then detail.
- Original data. Surveys, pricing breakdowns and benchmarks. If you're the source of a number, other pages cite you, and so does ChatGPT.
- Comparison tables. "X vs Y" with clear criteria.
- Step-by-step instructions. Numbered steps with specific settings, not vague advice.
- Up-to-date pages. For questions about prices, tools or recent changes, a visible "last updated" date and current facts help.
One useful data point: an Ahrefs study of ChatGPT's 1,000 most-cited pages found Wikipedia accounted for 29.7% of them, followed by homepages and landing pages (23.8%) and educational content (19.4%).
What about the hacks? Here's how I'd sort common ChatGPT SEO advice by whether you can test it.
| Tactic | Documented or testable? | How to check it | My verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt | Documented by OpenAI | Server logs, robots.txt tester | Do it now |
| Get indexed and ranking in Bing | Testable | Bing Webmaster Tools, Bing searches | Do it now |
| Direct answers and clear structure | Testable | Before/after prompt tests | Worth doing |
| Brand mentions on cited third-party pages | Testable, slowly | Track which pages ChatGPT cites for your prompts | Worth doing |
| llms.txt file | Not documented by OpenAI as a signal | Log whether AI bots request it | Low cost, unproven |
| Hidden text or prompts aimed at AI crawlers | Manipulative | n/a | Don't |
| Buying "ChatGPT ranking" packages | No evidence | n/a | Don't |
On llms.txt, I've written a full breakdown of what llms.txt does and doesn't do for AI visibility. Short version: it's cheap, but don't expect it to move ChatGPT on its own.
Tracking ChatGPT mentions
You can't open a "ChatGPT Search Console". You can still measure three things.
Referral traffic. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in search results. In GA4, filter session source for chatgpt.com and build an exploration for landing pages. That tells you which pages ChatGPT sends people to.
Prompt tests. Write 20-30 prompts your customers would actually type, including ones that don't name you. Run them on a fixed schedule, log whether your brand is mentioned, whether you're cited, and which competitors appear. ChatGPT answers vary between runs and between users, so run each prompt more than once and look at trends, not single results.
AI visibility tools. Paid tools automate prompt tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. I compare them in the best AI visibility tools.

ChatGPT SEO mistakes to avoid
Blocking the wrong bot. A lot of sites added blanket rules against "all OpenAI bots" to stop training. If that rule catches OAI-SearchBot, you've opted out of ChatGPT search too. Block GPTBot if you want; allow OAI-SearchBot if you want search visibility.
Ignoring Bing. If your pages aren't in Bing's index, you're leaning entirely on OpenAI's other sources.
Testing once and drawing conclusions. One prompt run on one account tells you almost nothing. Personalisation, memory and model updates all change answers.
Treating ChatGPT SEO as separate from SEO. The pages ChatGPT cites are usually pages that already rank and get linked. The foundations in how to rank your website still apply.
Chasing volume over clarity. Publishing 100 thin AI-written posts won't help. A few pages with original data and direct answers are more likely to be quoted.
Expecting a fast turnaround. Search-mode citations can change within days of a fix. Training-data mentions only change when models are retrained, which can take months.
Want to see where your site stands before you start? Check that your robots.txt and CDN aren't blocking OAI-SearchBot or Bingbot, then work through the Bing steps above.
Frequently asked questions
How do you rank on ChatGPT?
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, get your pages indexed and ranking in Bing, and write pages with direct, specific answers. Then build brand mentions on sites ChatGPT already cites. Track progress with repeat prompt tests and chatgpt.com referral traffic in GA4.
How do I get my brand mentioned by ChatGPT?
Make your brand facts consistent across your site and profiles, then earn mentions on the review sites, roundups and publications that appear in ChatGPT answers for your category. For search-mode answers, rank the pages that answer your customers' questions. There's no paid placement or submission form for organic answers.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?
OpenAI names Microsoft as a search partner for ChatGPT search, and a Seer Interactive study found 87% of ChatGPT citations matched Bing's top results. ChatGPT also uses other providers and its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, so being indexed in Bing helps but isn't the only factor.
Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?
No. OpenAI says GPTBot is for model training and OAI-SearchBot is for search. Blocking GPTBot opts you out of training only. Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes your content from ChatGPT search answers, though your link may still appear as a navigational result.
How long does ChatGPT SEO take to work?
Crawler access changes take about 24 hours to register, according to OpenAI. Bing indexing can take days to weeks. Citations for new pages follow indexing and ranking, while brand mentions from training data only change when models are updated, which can take months.
